If you needed longer o shorter classes, we can arrange it without any problem, even week to week; however, I don’t recommend going below 45min or over 1:30h.
The classes can take place via Skype, Zoom, or Google Meets, whatever is better for you.
Each class adapts itself to the needs of the individual, as learning is a process that each undergoes in a particular way. However, I do recommend students to send their work the previous day so that I can study the music before the class. This way, we can begin to work directly, always in a dialectical manner. There is no “right” or “wrong” when speaking about aesthetics, so I will ask questions regarding your musical intentions and recommend things accordingly. I will also provide you with references and instrument manuals to help you.
Composition activities and exercises will only be recommended for very specific purposes, as I advocate for a practical approach to learning. Therefore, I believe there should always be an objective in mind when writing: a Music School exam, a call for scores, musical residences…
In analysis, we will focus on pieces that explore and innovate in each of the 5 main musical dimensions: sound (timbre, intensity, harmony, physical phenomena, and texture), time (rhythm, counterpoint, and structure/evolution), concept (ideas and their musical representation), representation (different graphical systems of musical writing), and space.
Depending on the degree of previous knowledge, classes will be more autonomous or guided, always focusing on a practical view of analysis and discovering new elements and ideas.
Practice without an objective has no sense; therefore, technology-assisted composition will always be guided by a project of your personal interest: whatever you need to develop it will be what we tackle in our classes.
Of course! Composition is an holistic process that requires many different skills. We can both asses your progress lesson by lesson and analyse what you need to do to improve. Your primary focus only helps me know your main objective.
